"From Hell," written and directed by the brothers Albert and Allen Hughes, is an excellent thrill ride that blends moody, atmospheric visuals and a strong, intriguing narrative. The movie is fully loaded with a memorable cast, and though you may not able to say the same about the movie itself, you will absolutely be able to say that you saw the best film of 2001. The film features the brilliant lead role of Johnny Depp as Jack the Ripper, a charismatic murderer who works his way through a group of five prostitutes. The film top-lines the current rumors that there are only four murders after five, but this is far from the point. Instead of going for gripping horror-thriller, Hughes stays mostly within a monotone of gloomy settings and moments of sexual humiliation. As a result, "From Hell" is, for the first time in a horror movie, really scary.
The film starts out a little slow-moving, but that is simply to give the viewer a chance to absorb the setting. Once that is accomplished, Depp morphs into a serial killer, and the movie begins to build an intense atmosphere. The movie is well edited and has a fast, efficient pace, and never quite drops the mood of uncomfortable。This is where the film really excels, and Hughes is obviously a talented filmmaker. The film basically tells the story of Jack the Ripper, the most famous serial killer in history. Hughes takes his time to set up the theory of the murders (also known as the "great legend of Jack the Ripper"), and after the murders the movie takes line for line as Depp walks his grisly path through London. d2c66b5586
