V9 is the next step in our journey to create a truly immersive virtual tabletop experience. With V9, we can no longer claim that virtual tabletops are only for gamers. We can no longer claim that only niche applications can benefit from Foundry VTT. We can no longer claim that it is only for 2D and 3D gaming. With this release, we are showing the world that virtual tabletops can be used to enhance and aid other types of projects. Whether you are a 2D artist, a 3D artist, a web developer, a graphic artist, or anything else, V9 is for you.

We have been getting the beta out as quickly as possible to those who have been waiting on us. We are still in the process of finalizing some details and implementing known issues. We are also open to answering questions so that we can make sure that you are able to make the most of your experience. Once we are able to move past our beta days, we will document more and more of the changes we are making in order to help you to make the best use of this new release. We welcome your feedback so that we can make Foundry VTT the best virtual tabletop experience yet.

While we believe that Foundry VTT is already one of the most performance-friendly virtual tabletops for its feature set, we also constantly strive to improve performance wherever we are able. It wasn't enough for us to improve the lighting engine and offer a more performant, more accurate experience. We also recognized a few avenues where we could improve the overall performance for game worlds. While the performance improvements might not be enough to lower our already low minimum requirements, many systems at or slightly above those requirements will find V9 eases some of the burden on computers that may have been struggling to keep up. Between the lighting overhaul, changes to polygon computation for vision calculation, performance improvements with regard to compendium data indexing, and many more small changes in data handling, the application should feel a little more smooth overall.

We have been hard at work on virtual tabletops this year, and have re-worked the UI, the application itself, and I'm sure there are more performance improvements in the works. We will continue to improve Foundry VTT with the goal of making it into a more natural part of the gaming experience. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the new features and performance improvements.
