Sometime in the future I will be writing up a technical documentation on the console versions of Powerslave and how the game worked as well as document its renderer. I will also be releasing the source code for Powerslave EX sometime in the future as well.
PowerSlave, also known as Exhumed, was a successful game on the Sega Saturn and the Playstation. The MS-DOS version was much less popular, partly due to its shortcomings compared to the Sega and Playstation versions. Fortunately for us, a remake of the game called PowerSlave EX has been released in 2015, which is based on the console version. So if you've never had the chance to play Exhumed a.k.a. PowerSlave on console, here's your chance to get a taste! It works on Windows 11, Windows 10, and older.
Easiest way to get Powerslave/Exhumed running on your latest Windows computer is to download it from Gog.com. For a fair price you get the entire game, suitable for the latest technology. Support for widescreen, DirectX 11, SMAA Antialiasing and much more. Download Powerslave/Exhumed now!
I once played a PS1 demo of Exhumed and LOVED it, but the game was so rare that I never once saw a copy. Hearing that the PC version was effectively another game was saddening, as it meant I'd likely never play that cool demo in full. Now I finally can!
Awesome! I really appreciate that you take the time to reverse engineer and reimplement these games. Not only does it provide a better end user experience, but helps to keep these games more relevant.
The game was released for Saturn, PlayStation, and MS-DOS. However, the console versions are vastly different from the computer one. The consoles used Lobotomy's SlaveDriver engine, and have a Metroid-like design in which, after acquiring new skills, you can go back to previous stages and reach previously unaccessible sections. In contrast, the computer version uses 3D Realms' Build engine, and is a strictly linear affair.
In 2015, a fan remake based on the PlayStation version called Powerslave EX was released. The download was then removed as Night Dive Studios hired its developer and planned to release that port commercially. This release, renamed Powerslave Exhumed, finally came out in 2022.
Lobotomy Software's amazing Powerslave (or Exhumed as it's also known) is easily one of the greatest first-person shooters of the Sega Saturn/Sony PlayStation era. Nightdive Studios returns to the game to deliver the definitive remaster. The remastering work is typically brilliant - and the game still shines today.
PowerSlave, known as Exhumed in Europe, is a first-person shooter developed by Lobotomy Software and published by Playmates Interactive. It was released in North America, Europe and Japan, for the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and MS-DOS over the course of a year from late 1996 to late 1997. On May 24, 2015, Powerslave EX, an unofficial remake based on the PlayStation version, was released for free, but has since been removed for download until further notice.

Filename and author Size (kb) Description PATCHES Beta Babes-=CHE@TER=- 6.84 In the early beta version of PowerSlave there where extra nude babes that where removed from the Retail game. This patch adds them back in to the retail version, where they were originally placed by the developers on the maps.
-Revert [Run] logic (always run)The game normally requires the player to hold down the key to run, (the logic of this key is reversed now), ie, you no longer need to hold down the key all the time, you will always run.
-/CDOFF always enabled (No-CD)This patch sets the flag include parameters / CDOFF on the command line, ie, game will not require a CD-ROM to run, as well as for Exhumed , it disables the 2nd check for the MSCDEX low level driver.
-Allow F12 key to take screenshotsSaves images in PCX format in your games folder, CAPT0000.PCX etc...Returns to the game the ability to shoot screenshots in the \"CAPT ####. PCX\" files by pressing the F12 key as in other BUILD games. Also disables the hiss of the PC Speaker during file recording, so they will be created VERY fast.
-Tweak player movement prediction for enemiesExclude player movement delta from prediction formula (fixes enemies shooting).Notes:The game code uses only player delta for X and Y between current and the laststate to predict player position. This will works only on limited caseswhen the player moving on a straight line without changing directions orspeed. But if rapidly moving to the opposite sides this prediction codecauses enemies to shoot their projectiles at random directions. When this prediction disabled all enemies will shoot to the current playerposition like in the most of the other FPS games.
-Custom BUILD screen resolutionsAllows you to select any screen resolution supported by the BUILD engine in addition to 320x200 and 640x400. Note that a couple of trifles in the game interface is tied to the old resolution, so, for example, when choosing a training level during the game, the text-request for continuation will be in the center of the screen, and its black background in the upper left corner, instead of the place . Also the game was not tested at all possible resolutions, for example 1600x1200 - I simply do not have a monitor that supports this resolution.>(STATUS.MSK file, This file tells the game where the transparent and solid areas are for the HUD), The patcher program requires the games STUFF.DAT group file to be present to read the original .MSK and it writes a new modified one in the games root folder, stretching it to the proper screen width. (The Original STATUS.MSK file are used for 320 pixels width and just doubled for 640.) For mask larger than 1024, I increase stack size to 1600 so now you can safely use the the larger resolutions correctly. HUD, menu and weapon animation sprites (machete, hands with pistol, grenade, etc.) will scale to current resolution so there are a big pixels and it's looks like the old lo-res mode. But everything else (the world) will be in high resolution.-Many little things in the game interface are tied to the old resolution, so, for example, when choosing a workout during the game, the text-request for continuation will be in the center of the screen, and its black background in the upper left corner, instead of the required space. The game was not tested in all resolutions, so there may be some more problems.
Some Improvements (started with v1.2):- rewritten in C instead of Pascal - around the same size executable, but a lot more features.- brand new user-friendly interface written from scratch.- auto-detects current version of the game - the executable selection menu will now only show when both EX.EXE and PS.EXE are simultaneously present in the current folder.- new hack: \"Allow F12 key to take screenshots\" which enables native game screenshot support and disables PC Speaker noises (very FAST save) - thanks to BlackDoomer for the help with the relocs data- some bug fixes here and there
The archive contains the source code for (TP7, in general, the game under DOS ...), as well as the executable file for DOS. I tried to make the code short and simple so that everyone could add there own changes.
However, the biggest change is in the game structure. Instead of a linear series of massive levels, the world is split into smaller locations that you can jump back and forth between. Areas are often inaccessible and can only be overcome by finding permanent upgrades such as a higher jump, the ability to breathe underwater, and more. This focus on exploration and backtracking essentially makes PowerSlave one of the earliest known examples of a first-person shooter using elements of the Metroidvania sub-genre, years before the Metroid Prime trilogy gained mainstream acclaim for it.
\"A 90's FPS & a libre compatible engine\"BuildGDX is a port of the Build Engine games based on Java's LibGDX framework v1.9.10.Currently, it supports Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Redneck Rampage, Shadow Warrior, Witchaven, Witchaven2, Legend of the Seven Paladins, TekWar, and Powerslave/Exhumed. I'm planning to port Fate, WW2GI in the future releases.️ Wikipedia: PowerSlave, known as Exhumed in Europe, is a first-person shooter developed by Lobotomy Software and published by Playmates Interactive. PlotPowerSlave is set in and around the ancient Egyptian city of Karnak in the late 20th century. The city has been seized by unknown forces, with a special crack team of hardened soldiers sent to the valley of Karnak, to uncover the source of this trouble. However, on the journey there, the player's helicopter is shot down and the player barely escapes. The player is sent in to the valley as the hero to save Karnak and the World. The player finds himself battling hordes of extraterrestrial insectoid beings known as the Kilmaat, as well as their various minions, which include mummies, Anubis soldiers, scorpions, and evil spirits. The player's course of action is directed by the spirit of King Ramses, whose mummy was exhumed from its tomb by the Kilmaat, who seek to resurrect him and use his powers to control the world. In the console versions, there are two endings, depending on the player's course of action during the game. In the good ending, the protagonist has collected eight pieces of a radio transmission device, so he can send a rescue signal and be extracted from the Valley. After reclaiming the mummy of Ramses, the Pharaoh thanks him for his effort, and promises the player that he will inherit Ramses' Earthly kingdom, and that the Gods will bless him with eternal life and make him ruler of the world. After escaping the collapsing tomb, the player is indeed rewarded as such, and becomes a powerful and benevolent Pharaoh of the entire planet. In the bad ending, the player has failed to collect all eight pieces of the radio transmitter, and is subsequently buried in the tomb of Ramses, only to be excavated centuries later by the now ruling forces of the Kilmaat. In the MS-DOS version, there are two slightly different endings, again depending on the player's course of action, but only in the final stage. The final stage takes place aboard the Kilmaat mothership, where a nuclear weapon has been armed and is set to go off in 15 minutes, and has enough power to obliterate the planet. In the bad ending, which occurs if the player loses all of their lives or fails to disarm the bomb in time, Earth is destroyed in a massive nuclear blast. In the good ending, which occurs if the player makes it to the bomb on time, the Kilmaat retreat from the planet, but the main character is stuck on their ship and needs to find a way off.GameplayGameplay in the both the original PC version and console versions follows the standard first-person shooter formula. Familiar elements from the genre, such as health refills and a selection of different weapons, are present. However, in the console versions as well as the remastered PC version, Powerslave EX, the game functions more as a hybrid of a first-person shooter and a metroidvania, as the player obtains new weapons and ancient artifacts over the course of the game, providing them with abilities that allow them to explore previously unreachable areas, all of which are connected with an overworld map. Such abilities include being able to jump higher, levitate, breathe underwater, walk in lava and walk through force fields. 59ce067264
