The band took its name from the title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception, itself a reference to a quote by William Blake. After signing with Elektra Records in 1966, the Doors with Morrison recorded and released six studio albums in five years, some of which are generally considered among the greatest of all time,[5][6] including their self-titled debut (1967), Strange Days (1967), and L.A. Woman (1971). They were one of the most successful bands during that time and by 1972 the Doors had sold over 4 million albums domestically and nearly 8 million singles.[7]
Although session musician Larry Knechtel had occasionally contributed bass on the band's debut album,[49] Strange Days was the first Doors album recorded with a studio musician, playing bass on the majority of the record, and this continued on all subsequent studio albums.[50] Manzarek explained that his keyboard bass was well-suited for live situations but that it lacked the \"articulation\" needed for studio recording.[50] Douglass Lubahn played on Strange Days and the next two albums; but the band used several other musicians for this role, often using more than one bassist on the same album. Kerry Magness, Leroy Vinnegar, Harvey Brooks, Ray Neopolitan, Lonnie Mack, Jerry Scheff,[51] Jack Conrad (who played a major role in the post Morrison years touring with the group in 1971 and 1972), Chris Ethridge, Charles Larkey and Leland Sklar are credited as bassists who worked with the band.[52][53]
The recordings for Full Circle took place a year after Other Voices during the spring of 1972, and the album was released in August 1972. For the tours during this period, the Doors enlisted Jack Conrad on bass (who had played on several tracks on both Other Voices and Full Circle) as well as Bobby Ray Henson on rhythm guitar. They began a European tour covering France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, including an appearance on the German show Beat-Club. Like Other Voices, Full Circle did not perform as well commercially as their previous albums. While Full Circle was notable for adding elements of funk and jazz to the usual Doors sound,[128] the band struggled with Manzarek and Krieger leading (neither of the post-Morrison albums had reached the Top 10 while all six of their albums with Morrison had).[129] Once their contract with Elektra had elapsed the Doors disbanded in 1973.[8]

He wasn't exactly sure on any of those things, except it was definitely 1969 and not Ax Genrich. We now know (99% sure) it is Jim Kennedy.That original cassette copy was rather raw and low-fi, but just about listenable. It was obviously brilliant music. The raw roots of a lot of the material heard later on UFO. When converting my cassette archive to digital, I was surprised that by some tweaking, processing and EQing I could get the recording to sound much better than many things I'd heard documented on CD. Several levels of processing further to that you now have what is on this disc. I could have believed what I read about Dik Dik. Over and over I read they were really an Italianpop/beat group who changed styles for convenience to deliver 1972's wonderful Donna. But then I sawone of my prog vendors offering a new mini-lp sleeve with this proggy album cover and figured I hadto check it out. So, yeah. Well it could be worse. It's even grown on me after repeated plays. But lest you toy with succumbing to the prog maiden as I have, let me warn you as the others have:this is not Donna. Recorded in late '75 - early '76 \"Volando\" is clearly a retreat to the melodic Italian pop/rocksongs of the 3-5 minute range, although there has been some retention of sound if not composition.By this time there had been line-up changes and Dik Dik had actually picked up some members of theRPI heyday, including Hunka Munka's Roberto Carlotto and Osage Tribe's Nunzio \"Cucciolo\" Favia. They were however bringing only their musical talents and not their prior progressive era tricks. \"Volando\" offers the listener soft and romantic pop/rock ballads and simple, very \"hummable\"melodies with lots of vocal harmonies and gentle fade-outs. They sound mostly like love songsalthough I don't understand Italian lyrics. Gentle crooning of repetitive verses and choruses withthe occasional drop of a tasteful guitar or keyboard solo. You can however expect the classy andwarm Italian feel in the arrangements and instrumentation: lovely female background vocals in thetitle track, crisp acoustic guitars delicately played, lots of pretty keyboards and mellotron, andmostly soothing, romantic lead vocals. It is still very much in the '70s vein of pop sounds, notyet the slick and emotionally empty drivel that some bands would stoop to in the 1980s. What youshould not expect is anything like the wild and crazy Italian prog albums of the 71-74 period, nocompositional insanity or instrumental daredevilism. Every once in a while they drop a littleteaser that sounds like they remember the prog days, like the dramatic and beautiful instrumentalopening of Carlotto's \"Cavalli Alati.\" The album closes with an sentimental cover of The Mamas AndThe Papas \"California Dreamin\" and the 2002 M2U Records cd version offers a live bonus track\"L'isola di Wight.\" In fact that's probably the right single word to choose to sum up the overallfeel of \"Volando\"---sentimental. And since I am a fairly sentimental guy, I guess it's fine that Iended up with this album in my collection, even if not a progger's delight. While this is not a bad album it does require 2 stars from me as the description of \"for fans\" ofthe genre surely applies. If you love the melodic Italian pop tradition or Dik Dik in general, youmay wish to add this pretty soft-rock album to your collection.
