They find a drawbridge in the middle of the forest: Gotrek finds a book on the drawbridge, and begins to read it. Gotrek recalls seeing a similar book in a library in the dwarven city of Osturk, and wonders if this one really belongs to Ortco, the great dwarf scholar. Gotrek proceeds to read the book, and realize Ortco has written it in a way to tell the story of the Diehls. There are many odd characters in the story, notably Earwig, the self-serving traitor and son of Ortco who wants his own treasure and slays Felix before he can find it, Oleg, the Mutant Soldier of Kruger Von Der Gabel that Gotrek hates, and Mephisto, the Mouse named for the Witch-king of Angmar. The story details how Felix and Gotrek are thrown into the Rat Guard that protects the village. Ortco tells the story of how they were able to escape: the village was poisoned by the Rat Guard, a group of Dwarves tasked with guarding all the tunnels that lead to the village. Gotrek uses the tunnels and a complex series of traps to get back into Mazelia. Ortco is taken away by the Rat Guard, and discovers that the Rat Guard are actually a group of elves that follow the Ten Ton Hammer cult, and were driven to insanity by a cultist who tried to use their own blood to "restore their faith". The elves set the villages furnaces on fire and the entire village is burnt alive. The elves then blame the magic of the dwarves for the disaster, which begins the village being burned every three years in reprisal. The dwarves flee Lustenau, but are called back by Gotrek, who saves Klebb, the daughter of the last Rat Guard leader. They then awaken the Rat Guard, and they fight the elves throughout the battlefield. Eventually, they retreat to the Chaos Wastes and set off for Karak. While in the Wastes, they come across the body of Earwig, crucified by his comrades. Gotrek, following the hoofprints, finds the camp of Lady Marik, one of the Witch-Kings of Angmar, and the story ends there. d2c66b5586
