But when he (the younger son) came to his senses

Some translations say, “When he came to himself.”

When no one offers to help the son, and he is about to cram the pig pods in his mouth, he begins to realize something is wrong with this picture. Notice when the son comes to himself, his heart turns back to his father. His inner dialogue starts directing him toward his father’s house (even if he still doesn’t have it right). When he comes back to his right mind, he turns his feet toward home.

  • Are you in a far country and need to come to your senses? To assess the reality of the circumstances with accuracy and honesty?

  • Is there any area in your thinking you need “to come to your senses”?

  • Are you in a situation where you need to come to yourself and head home to your Father’s house?
