As you read and reread these familiar words, please don’t allow rote memory to cause you to skim them. Take note of what you are asking for in this request. Yesterday, as I read and quoted the prayer, this phrase pierced me.

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Consider these questions as you ponder this phrase.

  • What is your definition of a kingdom?

  • Whose kingdom are we asking to come?

  • By our words and actions, whose will are we asking to be done? Ours or God’s?

  • How do you think God’s will is carried out in heaven?

  • Ask God to bring his kingdom to you, in you, and through you.

  • Ask God for his will be done (accomplished, completed) in you as it is in heaven.
